Treating Sciatica Pain at the Milwaukee Acupuncture and Health Center
Sciatica is a common, albeit unnecessary pain that bothers too many people every day. By definition of the National Institute of Health, "Sciatica refers to pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling in the leg. It is caused by injury or pressure on the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is a symptom of another medical problem, not a medical condition on its own."
As you can see, Sciatica can be the result of a multitude of causes. Some of the most common include, but are not limited to; slipped disk(s), piriformis syndrome, pelvic injury, chronic lower back pain, poor posture, or compensation injuries.
The pain from sciatica can vary greatly from a dull tingle to a burning sensation. Often increased pressure on the buttocks will aggravate the pain. This pain often leaves the sufferer unable to move without fear of escalating the pain.
Acupuncture has been shown to help drastically reduce symptoms that are associated with sciatica pain. Sciatica is often the result of stagnation of Qi (energy) and blood circulation in the meridians (channels) located in the lower back, buttocks, and thigh. This circulation blockage leads to the lack of proper nourishment of the soft tissue in the local area. One of the most common issues with sciatica is that it will come and go over years of re-injury. That is why it is important to treat not only the symptoms but the underlying cause of the problem. Some of the most common underlying issues are explained in Chinese medicine as a issue with our Liver or Kidney Qi.
